The mystery of a good recall
The recall is a very good command, I would say essential life of a dog.
For if our dog has a good reminder every now and can we afford to let him free. Otherwise there fideremo never to loose, but the dog will always lack that feeling of freedom of movement that can only be off leash.
long as the dog you on 4 / 5 months of age, people are convinced that the dog has the call in the sense that never strays too much and then just call the dog arrives immediately.
In reality, the dog until that age is not yet sufficiently independent and courageous move far from the owner and, therefore, gives the impression of the call. In fact, however, exceeded the 5 months the dog takes a bit 'over independence, and if at that point, had taught him the call, it's easy when it is still called to mind their own.
To teach a good recall is necessary before all start with an exercise that shows the dog that come to us is always a good solution, much better than anything else interesting that while he is doing is free!
The first exercise to be done requires the presence of two persons, one holding the dog on a leash and the other with a morsel of food as a reward that comes close to the dog, makes him smell it, then runs via still call the dog. The dog will chase it at that point but can not because is on a leash. After a few meters of travel, the person must stop and crouch on the ground waiting for the dog, then the dog will be let go and reach the person. It is important when it comes to stop him by the collar and then give him the much deserved award.
doing so we are using the predatory instinct of the dog to make it interesting in his eyes and to make sure they come to us, namely we are simulating a prey that runs away and the dog want to chase.
You must work for a few weeks a little bit every day in various places with this type of exercise and then move to free up the dog and try to call him.
Again the first few times you just look at you run away calling him crouching and waiting when he arrives and then give him his prize and many caresses.
As you then begin to add distractions, that anything that distracts the dog from hearing and must continue to reward him when it comes.
After working well for some time, if you find that your dog has mastered you can start walking instead of crouching in wait and then not having to run away when you call. When the dog learns to come too so you can then move to gradually remove the premium, but remember to always praise and petting him when he comes to you!
In general, the most common mistake when teaching the recall the dog is angry with him or scold him if that does not happen. In this way I teach the dog that it is sometimes better to avoid the dog and then in subsequent calls will remember and will begin to come less and less happy. If you find that it is advantageous to come to us, choose to do so without any problems!
It is important to understand that teaching a good recall is an exercise long and demanding and it can take several months and maybe even other devices based on the type of dog.
So if you find yourself not being able to do this exercise on your own is always best to consult a good dog educator, but use only gentle methods.
When the dog finally has a good recall but you can feel safe to loose often, but always using his head and not releasing it in places that can be dangerous for him!
In this way you will set a bit 'in the nature of freedom!
