here's another data transmission system that uses laser light pulses, then the wavelength and frequency of visible light
- and does without the cables.
This system is the fruit (immature) of the research team led by Dr. Hughes on behalf of
AOptix Technologies and the U.S. aviation
(Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Air Force Research Laboratory). In one experiment, scientists are keeping a wireless link to 35 km away, with a comparable bandwidth than fiber optics. 
The problem in the transmission of light at a distance without wires is the signal distortion. The research team has solved at least in part, this issue, also being able to transmit from an aircraft in flight.
